Within the layered ebb and flow of paint and plaster, my artwork seeks to reveal the energy of the subject combined with my own artistic energy. It is a reflection on our multicultural society through the full sensory process of material handling. The paintings are an exploration of the flow state, as the tactile materials drive the art creation. This practice-led manipulation of plaster and paint explores personal identity and the energy within each subject. Smooth plaster, vibrant paint, and ochres are combined on a board to create a unique painting ground. Portraits are drawn in charcoal onto the ground and then sculpted in skim plaster as bas-relief. Watercolour paint is applied over the plaster and then sanded or eroded with water to achieve a timeless textural surface. My palette is inspired by the mineral paints of Renaissance fresco and the vibrant ochres of the Northern Territory, creating a connection in this practice between two hemispheres of the earth. This use of colour and texture flow with the plaster, becoming a form of contemporary fresco which asks the viewer to look further and connect with the embedded layers depicting local people and their personalities.
